Not sure if all this pessimism on Garza is warranted. Let's remember, he's only 25 and coming into his 3rd full season. The main knock on Garza has never been the talent, but his ability to keep composure when he gets in trouble. Can't read too much into the WS but he showed what he can do when he's poised and focused.

I wouldn't go overboard on him but he should be a servicable roto contributor, IMO.

Ripken and Gwynn received 98.5% and 97.6% respectively for 2007 induction. I agree that Ricky's attitude will be a factor in voting but honestly, anything under 95% would be ridiculous although I am willing to bet he only receives about 85%. Take the fact that Ricky was the greatest leadoff hitter ever, with the runs and stolen bases & 3K hits, now throw in the 500+ doubles and 297 HR

Next round is key--here you look for a Rollins, Crawford, Martin to complement Howard and solidly balance your hitting...I'd feel comfortable getting solid pitching types (4) and (1) hitting category specialist over next 5 picks, decently fill a couple position holes and favorite sleeper in rounds 11-14, drag opponents through the mud 15-19 with superior pitching choices, and kick them off my heels in the end game with youth and speed.

There is another player that Cust is almost exaclty the same as, his soon to be Team mate Jason Giambi.

av/obp/HR/OPS+

Giambino .247/.373/32/128

Custambino: .231/.375/33/132

Pat Burrell is another who will put up very similar numbers. Unfortunatley the ugly batting average and complete lack of speed that these guys have make them far better real Baseball players than Fantasy Baseball players!

Tony, I couldn't have said it any better myself. That is probably the best pro/con of drafting Howard that I've heard. You almost make me think twice, but not so fast my friend.

Ryan Howard is the only player to league the ML in two categories except for Cliff Lee and is anyone drafting him in the first round or even the second?

Ryan Howard hits close to .280 this year. You heard it here first.

My argument for Howard being a first round pick is that he is the only player in baseball that is head and shoulders ahead of the rest in two categories. Howard led the ML in HR with 48, the next closest was Dunn with 40. He also led the ML in RBI with 146, the next closest being Hamilton with 130.

No other player in baseball led the league in two different categories except for Cliff Lee in W and ERA which nobody expects a repeat.

Like Mike P. said, the dollar value for those extra stats is significant. So I believe that Howard is worth the extra money in auctions.

Howard may have had a bad BA the last couple of years but he's a much better hitter than he's shown in that time.

In my opinion, the only other teams that that I'd rather have than the Howard, Kinsler, Markakis team would be the Pujols, Bay, Youkilis team and the Hamilton, Pedroia, Morneau team. But with the Pujols, Bay, Youkilis team you have no steals there where you have good BA and steals with Kinsler and Markakis plus having 2B locked up early.

It's a good case study but it's all dependent upon opinion and how confident you are about making up those steals later in the draft.

Don't think I'm going to be looking for Ryan Howard in the first round.

A review of his stats, though, makes for an interesting discussion.

His BABIP in 2008 indicates to me that he could improve to .280-.300 AVG, actually... but, where I get concerned is the 52 point drop
in OBP.

Then, it gets even stranger considering that he -- I believe -- had a career high runs scored last season (105).

There is definitely some potential for first round greatness, here, in 2009. But, might be a little too much gamble (and too many strikeouts) for my tastes. Still, hard not to salivate at a near lock for 45 HR, 140 RBI.

If the Fantasy Baseball Generals is going down then this is a great way to send it off. Great discussion!

With that in mind I think that the premise is wrong. The bedate should not be Howard-Dunn. It should be Adam Dunn versus Jack Cust!

Dunn hit 7 more homers and 24 more RBI last year and there averages were equal. Dunn is a 4-5 rounder and Cust is a 20-22 rounder! I'll take the extra money and use it on a high average steals guy and come out ahead!

I agree with Tony Cincotta on the downside of taking Ryan Howard. His poor batting average and no steals dictates your entire draft. By having to correct your lineup to make up for your deficiencies, the Ryan Howard owner really handcuffs himself and cannot take the best player available.

Great stuff and I can't wait for it to continue on Fantasy Pros 911.
